26:90 How Long?

26:90 How Long?

Scripture:

1 Kings 18:21

Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is god, follow him.”
      But the people said nothing.

Observation:

Elijah asked Israel to make a choice. It’s either God is God, or Baal is god, but you’ve got to choose. They didn’t.

Application:

I feel (sometimes) like shouting this same phrase from my own rooftop—to my neighborhood, to my city, to my state, to my country! (Especially this week. For some unknown reason….)  And then I take a looooong look at myself, and say the same thing to myself. How long? How long will I waver? Between the opinions of the world and God’s opinion? Or between the lure of the world and pursuing God with that same passion? The wavering has to stop with me.

Prayer:

LORD, help me not to waver, like the waters of the sea, but to be steadfast and UNwavering toward You. Keep me steady, so I can serve You.

25:90 Wholly Devoted

25:90 Wholly Devoted

Scripture:

1 Kings 8:61

Let your heart therefore be wholly devoted to the LORD our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.”

Observation:

He asks us to be Wholly devoted to the Him  in heart, action and thinking.

Application

Am I WHOLLY devoted? Does my life—my actions, my heart, my thinking–reflect that? What can I do or say differently that will show the LORD that I am WHOLLY devoted to Him?

Prayer:

LORD Jesus, Help me to be WHOLLY devoted to You—in all that I say, think and do. For Your Glory and Your Honor and Your Namesake, Amen.

24:90 The Cost?

24:90 The Cost?

Scripture:

2 Samuel 24:24

However, the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price, for I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God which cost me nothing ” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Observation:

David had just come through a season of his life where he understood true worship—that it must cost him something…so when Araunah offered to GIVE him the thing he desired to worship the LORD in, David understood that true sacrifice and worship must be felt—must be paid for.

Application:

What does your worship cost you? Pride? Arrogance? Time? Space? Giving up other things? This Bible in 90 days journey is a form of worship—anytime we read His word, we are worshipping Him. So, today, think about the cost of your worship—and see if you could be offering more. Is this coming for free, or are you paying a price?

Prayer:

LORD, help us to see the cost of our worship of You as a blessing and as a “cost” well spent. Help us to cherish our sacrifice to You. Amen.

23:90 A Lesson I Wish I Could Teach Every Girl in the World

23:90 A Lesson I Wish I Could Teach Every Girl in the World

Scripture:

2 Samuel 13:15-16

Then Amnon hated her with a very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up, go away!”

But she said to him, “No, because this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you have done to me!” Yet he would not listen to her.

Observation:

Amnon loved her. He pined after her. He faked being sick so that she’d come serve him and be near him.

And when he got what he wanted from her (after raping her), he simply hated her. More than he’d ever loved her. He abandoned her and sent her away.

Application

I wish this story was taught in Sunday School.

Not because I want to dash the dreams of love of every girl aged 11-18, but I’d like to show how God’s Word warns of lust vs. love.

The Word shows right here how lust disguised as love can feel as real as the REAL THING….until you’ve given away too much, or until you’ve had too much taken away from you—it’s not something you can get back…..and although no mess, no life, no problem is bigger than the cross of Jesus, it’s a life of heartache and heartbreak for those involved…especially the one who is scorned.

Please consider mentoring or helping out at homes or camps or classes where purity is taught and emphasized—it’s the best gift you can give to a girl…to help her learn to wait for LOVE.

Prayer:

LORD, help us to protect our girls and to pray for them. Help daddies everywhere who aren’t showing their girls enough attention, that the girls are seeking it in the arms of the wrong person. LORD, heal those who have been hurt by LUST disguised as love, and LORD, please LORD JESUS, heal those who have been scorned and shamed and hurt by something they didn’t choose. In the Name of Jehovah-rapha, our Healing God, Amen.

22:90 Undignified Worship

22:90 Undignified Worship

Scripture:

2 Samuel 6:5, 16, 20-22

Meanwhile, David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD with all kinds of instruments made of fir wood, and with lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets and cymbals.

Then it happened as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

But when David returned to bless his household, Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel distinguished himself today! He uncovered himself today in the eyes of his servants’ maids as one of the foolish ones shamelessly uncovers himself!”

So David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel; therefore I will celebrate before the LORD.

”I will be more lightly esteemed than this and will be humble in my own eyes, but with the maids of whom you have spoken, with them I will be distinguished.”

Observation:

David and all the people of Israel were CELEBRATING the return of the Ark of God with all sorts of music, instruments, dancing, singing and praise.  Michal saw him do this, and thought the King of Israel shouldn’t act so “undignified” as to sing and dance in just his robe (Or at all!) David said, in essence, “I will be even more Undignified than this if the Lord requires it, and I’ll join the most humble servants in the kingdom to do it.”

Application:

Worship is so personal, so intimate and so wonderful in the sight of God! He commands worship. We need to worship Him with no thought to what those around us might be thinking about us….and we need to be cautious to not judge others in their worship of the Holy One!

Prayer:

Jesus, help me to find joy and abandon in worshipping You! Amen!

21:90 What a guy

21:90 What a guy

Scripture:

1 Samuel 24:17-22

He said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for you have dealt well with me, while I have dealt wickedly with you.

”You have declared today that you have done good to me, that the LORD delivered me into your hand and yet you did not kill me.

”For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safely? May the LORD therefore reward you with good in return for what you have done to me this day.

”Now, behold, I know that you will surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.

“So now swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants after me and that you will not destroy my name from my father’s household.”

David swore to Saul. And Saul went to his home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

Observation:

David had the opportunity to kill Saul, but chose to honor his position as the LORD’s anointed rather than his sworn enemy, and let the LORD take vengeance on the king instead. He also promised to take care of Saul’s family after he died, even after Saul pursued him for years and made several attempts to take his life.

Application:

Listening to the LORD rather than our natural human tendencies will yield MUCH better results and will have the blessing of the LORD on our lives.

Prayer:

Lord, Help me to listen to You as David did here—to hear Your will and to follow Your voice—rather than the voice of my wicked heart that would rather see vengeance now. Amen.

20:90 If We’ve Ever Needed You

20:90 If We’ve Ever Needed You

Scripture:

1 Samuel 8:18, 12:20-25

“Then you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.”

Samuel said to the people, “Do not fear. You have committed all this evil, yet do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.

”You must not turn aside, for then you would go after futile things which can not profit or deliver, because they are futile.

”For the LORD will not abandon His people on account of His great name, because the LORD has been pleased to make you a people for Himself.

”Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and right way.

”(Only fear the LORD and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.

”But if you still do wickedly, both you and your king will be swept away.”

Observation:

Samuel: After the King has done all that I’ve warned you about, the KING you demanded, you will call out to the LORD because of your heaviness and your yoke, but He won’t listen because today, you have rejected Him.

Application:

The answer lies in 12:20-25! Keep on praying and following Him and Him alone.

Prayer:

Lord, if we’ve ever needed You—it’s now. Help us not to do what is right in our own eyes, or worse, to be yoked to the king we’ve appointed ourselves…whether it’s a person or a thing or a lifestyle–but rather, let us follow You—the True King, the God of Israel. Amen.

This song…is such a cry and prayer for us in our day.

Falling Behind….

Falling Behind….

Amy @ Mom’s Toolbox asked me to write some tips for some of the readers who have fallen behind. It’s also posting today @ Mom’s Toolbox.

Enjoy! We’ll be back to SOAPS tommorow.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So, you’ve fallen behind. A little bit? A lot?  Let me tell you a story that may be a little bit of encouragement to you.

Last January 31, I decided I wanted to read the Bible in 90 days—saw Amy’s website “advertising” it, and thought it would be a great challenge for me in the “new year.” So I began, only to discover I’d started 30 days AFTER Amy’s group had started. But that didn’t matter; I was determined to finish in MY 90 days. When I started getting toward 45 days, I began to really want to finish with the other group—but how do you catch up when you are behind 30 days?  (That’s a LOT of pages!! And right now, some of you who are behind 5 or 10 days are not feelin’ so bad.)

At first, I just read a few extra pages a day….and that caught me up 5 more days at the end of a week. But I was still behind 25 days and they were finishing in 10! So I asked the Lord to help me do this. Amazingly, He did. (Why are we always so surprised?!?)

In a matter of 16 days, I read and read and read and read…He cleared my days, He cleared my schedule, He provided space and quiet and time (and attention span) for me, and I finished with the rest of the gang. I read it in 66 days….and if I (a home school mom of 2 kids in middle and high school, a piano teacher, a wife and a swim team coach) can do it—anyone can!

I’ve written down some tips here for getting it done, and for catching up. Take what suits you, leave the rest….I really want you to succeed in this.  (In fact, there is a whole group of people who want you to succeed. The mentors have been praying and helping and loving on you—we want you to LOVE the Word…and to finish this going strong! These tips come from all of us, who’ve been there before…)

Reading the whole Bible in such a short period of time literally changed my life, changed my perspective, changed my outlook, and changed my heart. I want that for you too!

  • First things first. Decide that you really want to do this. Pray about it. If you really want this, you’ll be able to make time and get it done. (He will make a way for you.)
  • Tell God you are going to finish. Be determined to be true to your word.
  • How far behind are you? A couple days? Double up on Sunday and Monday, while keeping up with the daily reading. You’ll be caught up in no time.  A week or more? Make a plan. Stay with the current day in addition to reading ½ of each day you are behind until you‘ve caught up. It may take 2-3 weeks, but you can do it. It’ll require a commitment, but you’ve already committed, so that shouldn’t be a problem.
  • Redeem the Time. TAKE YOUR BIBLE EVERYWHERE YOU GO.  If you have 20 minutes before the kids wake up, or they are over at a friend’s house for an afternoon, or your lunch plans at work fell through, or you suddenly find yourself waiting in the car at practice for an hour, USE IT! God has cleared your schedule and has given you this time…use it to catch up or get ahead. And then praise Him for it!
  • If you are having a particularly busy time and feel you cannot commit to the whole day’s reading, at least set aside 15 minutes to get something done
  • Read even if you only have 5 minutes to do it (while lunch is heating in the microwave, while waiting for your kids to get their shoes on…)
  • Read the daily reading as early as possible in the day. You’ll be far less likely to forget if it’s the first thing you do. Also, you’ll get quite a spiritual boost by making the Bible first each day! I don’t think it’s by chance that David said “early will I seek thee” in Psalms 63:1. I know it’s hard to get up, I really do. But it’ll be worth it with your sense of accomplishment.
  • This is a READING plan, not a STUDY plan. Just read. It’s approx. 12 pages a day, of reading. Don’t try to decipher the hidden Hebrew or Greek. Just read.
  • I’ve been encouraging my group to make a “LATER LIST.” If you really don’t understand something or want to know more about something, have a list with you when you read, and mark down a phrase, a verse or a concept that you want to study LATER. Then put it aside and READ. (Last spring, when I read, I did this, and by the end of the Bible, I had discovered I didn’t know a whole lot about WORSHIP—so I STUDIED it for a couple months AFTER I was done. It works, I promise.)
  • Find someone to ENCOURAGE you in this. It’s monumental, but not impossible. We all need friends. As nice as it is to have an In-Real-Life friend to do this with, it’s not always a luxury we experience. If no one in your Real Life will be the encouragement you need, email your mentor (and if you don’t have one…. Email Amy (amy at momstoolbox dot com). Email me (kari dot dyan at hotmail dot com).  We can be that encouragement. We can chat. We can brainstorm to figure out a solution…There’s no shame, or embarrassment, or judgment, or anything of the sort…Just a sister trying to help you hop over this roadblock and get back on track.

I realize that not everyone who signed up for this 90 day challenge is a born and bred Christian. I know that some of us haven’t known about God for very long. I know that some of us (myself included) don’t have a local church they attend or a local group to fellowship with. I know all of this, yet it doesn’t matter one bit. Why? Because we are all a fellowship now. Right here online. It’s the craziest thing, but all 500+ of us that signed up are in this together. So if you have a question, or need some help or want to vent, or are frustrated, email Amy….she’ll get you in touch with someone who will become your ally in and through this.

It’s worth it, I promise. (God promises it, too… it’s in there.) Now GO READ!

Scripture:

1 Samuel 3: 1

…Now in those days messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon.

1 Samuel 3:7

Samuel did not yet know the Lord because he had never had a message from the Lord before.

Observation: Samuel, like most at the time, had never heard from the Lord, as this comes from the Old Testament, way before the Holy Spirit came along. And when the Lord was speaking to Samuel, he did not recognize it at first.

Application: We are so blessed to have the Holy Spirit’s guidance, if we ask for it! He wants to be in us and He wants to guide us. We just have to ask and then listen.

I have had friends ask me how I hear God. For me, it is often a gentle leading, yet I have also had a memorable experience where it was almost shouting in my head.

The best way to hear his voice is to give him the opportunity to be heard. Set aside time for studying his word. Then, when you hear it, you can hold up what  you hear to what is in the scriptures and you’ll know the truth.

You also have to set time aside to listen: Time that you can focus on him and just listen. Of course it can be difficult to set that time aside… don’t you think that’s how the enemy wants it?

I am no expert, but these are two ways I have found it much easier to hear his guidance. I am not perfect, but I do find when I am more often in the word and when I set time aside to listen, I hear much more. And I love it.

Prayer: Lord, help someone come across this post today who wants to hear from you but doesn’t know how. Guide her or him to not be frustrated, but instead to hear your voice and be drawn even closer to you. Thank you for wanting to be with me. And for talking to me.

19:90 Refuge

19:90 Refuge
#4 on my THINGS I DIDN’T KNOW WERE IN THE BIBLE list…..Judges 16:16

Scripture:

Ruth 2:12

May the LORD reward your work, and your wages be full from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge.

Observation:

Boaz recognized Ruth’s’ dedication to her mother-in-law, and by default, to the God of Israel. He recognized her need for a refuge, a place of quiet rest and peace. He blessed her in her work in his fields and basically identified himself as the one who would be that refuge for her.

Application:

I think that God oftentimes provides for us a place of refuge in other people, or in events in our lives.  Since I came to know the LORD 3 years ago (TODAY!), He has provided me with innumerable places of refuge through other people and events. Look around today and see not only what He is providing for you, but also whom can you be a refuge for?

Prayer:

Father, show me, lead me, and help me see Your places of refuge that You provide. Lead me to be that for others, and to give You the glory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

PS…today is my birthday. My born-again birthday. The only one that matters. Praise the LORD for His grace and mercy, that He is mighty to save.
